Appendix 2: History of the Science Plan

The Science Plan was prepared with the close involvement of SARCS. The development of the Plan has involved contributions from many people within and outside the region.  The draft document was initially prepared by Dr. Will Steffen as Executive Officer of the Global Change and Terrestrial Ecosystem (GCTE) International Project Office. In May 1996 the SARCS Secretariat in Bangkok, Thailand, hosted an Initial Planning Workshop involving more than 40 participants from 13 countries.   As a result of the meeting the first version of the document was revised. Further additions and revisions were then made to the document by successive SARCS project managers, Dr. Beverley Goh and Dr. Armadore Argete. Early in 1997 Dr. Louis Lebel as interim SARCS Project Manager took over the coordination of finalising the plan.  At the 9th SARCS Business held in Bogor, Indonesia, in March 1997 meeting it was agreed to proceed with the completion of the Plan for the Integrated Study. START International later commissioned Dr. Louis Lebel to complete a full next-to-final draft of the Science plan for consideration by the 10th SARCS Business Meeting. Experts were approached directly for input or comments on the draft text.  In addition, a web site was established and maintained and submissions made to e-mail discussion lists to encourage broader participation in the drafting of the Science Plan. Finally a small review committee was established to oversee and make final recommendations on revisions which were carried out by Dr. Louis Lebel.

    Appendix 3:  Acknowledgements

A great many people contributed to the preparation of the Science Plan. The following list of people contributed to the drafting of science plan, by providing notes, comments or original sources or by participating in planning workshops that helped improve the Science Plan. Major contributions to specific Activities (A) or Core Themes (CT) are shown in paranthesis. Names marked with an asterisk indicate major contributions, editorial or conceptual, that helped with large section of the current or earlier versions of the Science Plan.  Our sincere thanks to all named and any other unlisted contributors.
